PART I
A warm yet dark night, some 47 years ago, the Ayden orphanage had a new arrival. Madam Ewing went to the front door to throw out the cats she had found in the kitchen, there was "ROWR!!" as the cats clanged into a nearby trash barrel and scampered off. She then looked down, dusting off her hands in releif, only to find a basket at her feet. She bent down to take a look, squinting in the darkness. There was a sharp inhale of breath as she raised a hand to her mouth, she had spotted a babe in the basket, wrapped tightly in brown rags. After just a few moments, recovering from shock, Madam Ewing scooped the baby up in her caring arms, quickly rushing inside, closing the door with her rather sizable rump. There was a comotion inside as she called for some of the maidens to her assistance, some of the orphan children peered over the inside balconies, standing on tip-toe to see what was going on. The baby was cleaned and dressed, but only then did the matron notice the baby's ears and tiny figure. He was an elf! This made the Madam smile but the maiden helping her (Buttrice Grub) frowned, remarking her distaste for elves, "Pointy gits!". The Matron only ignored Buttrice, wrapping the baby up in soft blue cloth and placing him in the prepared cradle. That night she did not sleep, instead staying up, rocking the baby, sighing happily, whispering how peaceful the elven babe was.
